Joan RIDGEWAY (1982)

Joan Ridgeway

1932 - Born on January 3rd in Rockhampton. Her father was an itinerant worker and moved constantly to follow the work.

1944 - Family settled in Rockhampton. Joan could sing and yodel.

Started singing on a regular basis on a Friday night at the local theatre.

1947 - Entered her first talent quest.

1948 - Won a Nationwide Australian Hillbilly Championship in Brisbane- part of the prize was a screen test with Cinesound Studios. Offer stage and radio work in America but turned it down to concentrate on her career in Australia.

Won a heat on Australia's Amateur Hour.

1950 - At age 18 she started her own travelling variety show which featured a number of acts, including the Schneider Sisters.

Toured for 3 years until illness forced Joan to stop touring.

1951 - In November she recorded her first two sides.

1952 - Married and slowed down her career.

1953 - 55 - Recorded another 10 sides.

1954 - Appeared on the Buddy Williams show.

1956 - Her son was born.

1958 - A daughter was born.

1968 - Second son was born.

1982 - Inducted into the Hands of Fame.
