George PAYNE (1984)

George Payne

1932 – Born on March 3rd in Paddington, Sydney.

1936 – Family moved to a small farm at Liverpool. He became influenced by the yodeling of Harry Torrani, Tex Morton and Wilf Carter.

1944 – At age 12 with encouragement from his mother he entered talent quests and won radio 2UW’s “Australian Amateur Hour”. Joining with his younger brother, Joe, they became the “Payne Brother”.

1951 – Entered Tim McNamara’s “2SM National Talent Quest” and was runner up to Reg Lindsay. Rodeo Records signed him and he recorded 12 tracks for them. The first being “Love Sick Blues” and “Your Little Band Of Gold”.

1953 – Married Eileen and they became a duo performing at many shows.

1954 – Formed a duo with Paul Kelly which lasted for a number of years.

1984 – Inducted into the Hands of Fame.
